About DMS to Decimal Degrees

You can convert degrees, minutes, seconds for both latitude and longitude to decimal degrees. Simply enter the DMS values for lat or both lat and long, than press the convert button. The decimal degrees coordinates will be calculated and displayed below the form. Also the map will be centered to the DMS coordinates.

How to Convert Degrees Minutes Seconds to Decimal Degrees

First of all let's take a look at the symbols:

1 minute is equal to 60 seconds.

1 degree is equal to 1 hour, that is equal to 60 minutes or 3600 seconds.

To calculate decimal degrees, we use the DMS to decimal degree formula below:

Decimal Degrees = degrees + (minutes/60) + (seconds/3600)

Thanks it"s very helpfull converter.

Is there any way to convert Grid Square (ex; EL96an) to Lat Lon?

nice page and keep me working daily with it

this website is very helpfull

Very nice converter Thank you

Why isn't there a simple app for convertion

Tara, Longitudes west of the 0degree line in Britain have a negative value, math-wise. Enter the latitude, then use the deg/min/secs with a - symbol ahead of the longitude degrees. I worked mine out correctly for 43North and 114West, which is -114.

This is awesome method change Degree Minutes Seconds in Decimal Degree

Having problems - I know the grid ref for a garage in Alicante from Google and this program converts the Latitude no problem.

However, try as I might, I can't get the Longitude to work. I know what the decimal figure SHOULD be by using the formula but no way can I get this app to return the figure I want by entering DMS - what am I doing wrong ?

Google Earth Co-ordinates are : - 38d 16m 33.19s N 0d 32m 19.58s W

Decimal figures should be 38.275834 N -0.538842

Any help would be appreciated

I am trying to do a conversion from DMS to decimal degrees. When I enter the seconds for longitude, I keep getting a message that says "You must enter a valid value." According to the coordinates that AT&T gave me, the seconds for longitude should be 0.208W. How can I put the longitude seconds into the converter without getting the message? The seconds for latitude (37.585N) did not show this message.

That is great. Thank you!

Do you how to convert the difference between 2 position in degree and minutes to time (hours. Minutes)

North Latitude and East Longitude are entered as positive numbers. South Latitude and West Longitude are entered as negative numbers. Make sure all the DMS values are either negative or positive for Latitude and Longitude.

This is awesome, but is there are quick way of converting a batch quickly?

Is the seconds portion for Longitude broken? It will not allow me to enter a fraction of a second (0.7524).

It does not seem to be able to do longitude -0 50 0

That comes out as 0.83333333

when it should be - 0.83333333

Cannot enter "seconds" function as a number plus decimal, only as a whole number in Longitude. This works for Latitude.

N 59° 29' 6.78627" = 59deg 29min 6.78627sec Latitude

E 1° 50' 7.64895" = 1deg 50min 7.64895sec Longitude - Can only enter 1deg 50min 7sec for computation to work

Just put a negative in front of the degree number in order to change hemisphere, i.e. -9 for southern hemisphere, or -147 for western.

North and East are positive.

and South and west are negative so a

WEST Longitude would be example -111°

A South longitude would be -33°

So, I have a lat/long in this format: Degrees, Minutes and Seconds

W Long 06°14' 39.9"

precision matters, since the lat & long does not give the as by minutes & degrees

Why does this converter assume that the user is in the Northern Hemisphere and not give an option to state if the Latitude is N or S. The reciprocal position on the map in the Northern Hemisphere is not very helpful!

This is awesome!

Thanks a lot for this conversion tool!

very useful. grateful

These comments are really quite amusing. Lat & Long has been around for hundreds of years, way before the early navigators found American & Australia. All they needed was an accurate clock and then the world 'opened up'. One small problem was the world is not round, - it is an oblate spheroid.

Thanks, nice page and useful.

Very helpful, thanks!

HOW DO I CONVERT FOR EXAMPLE 39 DEGREES 52'08.4 TO DECIMALS? i CANT UNDERSTAND HOW YOU GET MINUTES WHICH IS 52 AND SECONDS OF 08.4?

cool site easy as

Hey LatLong, thank you for this resource. This is perfect for who can use free information to help their business. You guys should be proud of this site.

Thanks. Very easy to understand & it is very much useful for all.

I tried using the formula provided in excel in order to convert to DMS to decimal.

I find the DMS from Google Earth then plug the formula into excel to convert to decimal. When plugging the converted Decimal coordinates into google earth - it is off by a good amount. I assume that this is due to the projection not being used a regional/local level.
